Mully could not bring herself to think of today as being the day she was moving to California. She had to get behind the wheel before her head exploded. Everything would be alright once she was driving.

“Shotgun!” Trin yelled as she slapped the front passenger door of Mully’s Jag.

AJ shot Mully a look of horror over the roof of the car, and she shrugged in response. He and Ana would have to figure things out themselves. As Mully put on her seatbelt, she could just see AJ building a little barrier wall in the backseat between him and Ana made up of his CD binder, the tape recorder, and the other flannel shirt that they had left back there. She tried not to laugh, but it was so childish that she did smile a little bit. If Ana really still had a problem with AJ, all she had to do was stop hanging out with them. She’d gotten in the car, so obviously he was safe enough.

There wasn’t any plan for where to go or what to do next, so Mully started driving back towards the high school. Even though she couldn’t top Ana’s earlier door-closing trick, she couldn’t resist showing off a little.

“Watch this,” Mully said, letting go of the steering wheel and pushing her leg up so her knee could move it as she flew down the side road.

“That’s nothing,” Trin said with mock bravado. “I could drive this road with my eyes closed!”

“We’ve all tried that,” Mully replied immediately, but she didn’t try now because they had all learned the hard way that it was much, much harder than it seemed.

Mully turned onto the road their high school was on, taking the left particularly viciously. A laugh of pure delight escaped her as she sped up when the road straightened out. This was just what she needed.

“What do you think? Should I do it?” she called over her shoulder to AJ.

“Do it. I’ll get the music.”

“Do what?” Ana said as Mully opened her sunroof. AJ was leaning forward with a CD and frowned at the road ahead of them.

“We don’t have enough room now.”

Mully used a side road to loop around. AJ had to grip Trin’s seat hard to keep from flying around as she took the turns.

“Roll up your window Trin,” Mully instructed as she turned back onto the school road.

Trin did, despite the confusion written across her face.

“Physics, right?” Mully said to Ana. “Time for some history.”

AJ leaned forward and popped the CD into her Discman. He pressed play, and “Flight of the Valkyries” filled the car as Mully floored it, accelerating to sixty on the straight road. With the sunroof open and everything else shut, the pressure made a noise exactly like a helicopter, and even though it hurt their eardrums, everyone laughed in recognition.

The moment was soon over. Mully had to slow down as the road narrowed and turned twisty again. She and Trin both rolled their windows back down, laughing at each others’ crazy hair from the wind.
